Understanding how ethanol behaves differently from pure gasoline matters for operators managing storage, product quality, and customer satisfaction. The Petrol Group team outlines what operators need to know.

Ethanol blending in major markets

United States: E10 (10% ethanol) is the standard gasoline grade nationwide. E15 is approved for model year 2001+ vehicles and is increasingly available. E85 (51–83% ethanol depending on season) is available at flex-fuel stations. The Renewable Fuel Standard mandates minimum ethanol volumes in the fuel supply. European Union: E5 and E10 are the standard grades. E85 is available at some stations in Nordic markets. E10 has been the standard grade in most EU markets since 2021. Brazil: Gasoline contains 27% anhydrous ethanol (E27) by law. Hydrated ethanol (E100) is also sold as a separate fuel grade for dedicated flex-fuel vehicles — unique to Brazil globally. Other markets: India mandates E20 by 2025. Southeast Asian markets are at various stages of E5–E10 mandates.

Storage and handling differences

Ethanol is hygroscopic — it absorbs water from the atmosphere. Water contamination in ethanol-blended gasoline can cause phase separation: the ethanol and water separate from the gasoline and sink to the bottom of the tank as a water-ethanol mixture. This mixture will not combust in a gasoline engine and can damage fuel system components. Phase separation risk increases with higher blend percentages and in humid climates. Water management in E10+ tanks requires more frequent bottom-water checks than in straight gasoline tanks.

Equipment compatibility

Tanks, dispensers, and hoses used for E10 must be rated for ethanol service. Most modern equipment is compatible up to E25. E85 requires specifically rated equipment — standard E10 equipment is not suitable for E85. If you plan to add E85 dispensing, confirm equipment compatibility before installation.

The commercial case for higher ethanol blends

E85 and higher ethanol blends are typically lower cost per litre than standard gasoline — which drives price-sensitive customers. However, the energy content of ethanol is lower than gasoline, so E85 vehicles consume more fuel per kilometre. In markets with large flex-fuel vehicle populations, offering E85 can be a meaningful volume driver for the right location.

See also: ULSD vs premium gasoline guide and fuel storage guide.

Fuel ethanol at gas stations: mandatory blending requirements in major markets, storage and handling differences vs pure gasoline, phase separation risks, and the commercial case for E85/flex-fuel infrastructure.

[537,8

post-15989","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-todos","category-architecture

Fuel ethanol for gas stations: blending requirements, storage, and what operators need to know

<meta name="description" content="Fuel ethanol for gas stations: mandatory blending requirements by market, phase separation risk, storage differences vs pure gasoline and E85 infrastructure.
