Gas station column cladding with ACP: specification, installation and maintenance

How to specify and install ACP column cladding at gas stations: thickness, Kynar coating, fixing system, impact resistance and lifespan vs alternative materials.

Station columns are among the most visible — and most neglected — visual elements of the forecourt. Poorly specified column cladding delaminates in 2 years, fades in 18 months, or fails under hose impact. Correctly specified, it lasts 12-15 years with minimal maintenance. The Petrol Group team specifies column cladding for all forecourt projects.

ACP specification for columns

Minimum specification: 4mm total thickness, 0.5mm aluminium skin per face, PVDF/Kynar coating (minimum 70% PVDF content). For columns exposed to vehicle impact: 5-6mm total thickness. Coating finish: matte or satin — gloss shows dirt and micro-scratches more visibly in forecourt environment.

Fixing system: the most common failure point

Through-bolt direct fixing creates water ingress points that corrode the column structure. Correct system: extruded aluminium profile fixed to column structure, with ACP panel engaging the profile — no panel perforation. Neutral-cure silicone (not acetic acid) at all joints. Minimum 8-10mm joint width for thermal expansion.
