Gas station fueling island layout: dimensions, spacing and capacity planning

How to dimension gas station fueling islands: standard island size, lane width between islands, number of pumps for target volume and setback requirements from the property line.

The fueling island is the revenue-generating core of the station — where every liter is dispensed. Incorrectly dimensioned islands create bottlenecks that cap the station’s earning potential regardless of demand. The Petrol Group team has dimensioned island layouts for hundreds of fuel stations.

Standard island dimensions

Standard 2-pump island: length 4.5-5.5m, width 0.6-0.8m (pump body). Lane width between islands: minimum 4.0m (passenger cars); 5.5m (mixed van/SUV); 7.0m+ (trucks). Distance from site boundary: minimum 3m (dispenser). Distance from any building: minimum 4m.

Capacity planning

Each 2-pump island handles approximately 40-60 vehicles/hour at peak. For 150 vehicles/hour target: minimum 3-4 islands (6-8 dispensers). Truck-serving stations: reduce estimates by 30-40% — a truck fill takes 3-4x longer than a passenger car.
